Think of something that people normally tell you to shut up about, and pretend like your friends are there rolling their eyes as you go on and on about whatever it is you obsess over. This activity is designed to help you get comfortable speaking off-the-cuff and minimize the anxiety that comes from being afraid you won’t have anything to say. 

The more you practice, the better you’ll become at thinking quickly and delivering spontaneous speeches. So, grab your phone, hit record, and start talking. You might surprise yourself with how much you have to say when you have the space to speak openly without judgment.

Get Hyped About the “Unhypeable”

Enthusiasm can make or break your speech. If you want your audience to be excited about your topic, you need to show enthusiasm yourself. 

Now let’s try something a little more difficult: Choose an item or idea that you’ve never given much thought to—say, a kitchen utensil, or why fish are never thirsty—and practice talking about it with genuine enthusiasm. 

Use your voice, emphasis, and body language to make the topic seem like the most exciting thing in the universe. This activity helps you develop the skill of injecting enthusiasm into any presentation, making your delivery more engaging and dynamic.

Try Creating A Story Around A Photo

Storytelling used to be a respected profession, and for good reason. It’s a powerful way to connect with an audience. If you aren’t naturally good at it, don’t worry—it takes practice. 

For this exercise, look at the image above and then spend a few minutes crafting a story around it. Practice delivering your story with clear pronunciation and engaging body language. This exercise helps you think on your feet, develop storytelling abilities, and boost confidence in impromptu speaking situations.

To make it even more effective, present your story to your family and friends. Not only will it be fun, but it will also get you more used to speaking in front of crowds.

If you’re sitting, sit up straight and lean slightly forward to show engagement and interest.

Gestures

Using hand gestures emphasizes key points, adds visual interest, and makes your presentation more dynamic. It’s important to use gestures purposefully and avoid overdoing them, otherwise you can be distracting or appear insincere. Some effective gestures include open palm gestures to convey honesty and transparency, counting gestures to enumerate points, and descriptive gestures to help illustrate concepts or ideas. Keep your gestures within the “gesture box” (the area from your waist to your shoulders) to avoid appearing too expansive or distracting.

Facial Expressions

Your facial expression can convey a wide range of emotions and help reinforce your message. Smiling creates a positive and welcoming atmosphere, while using serious or concerned expressions can convey the gravity or importance of your message. It’s important to keep your facial expressions authentic and congruent with your words and tone of voice. Avoid negative facial expressions, such as frowning or scowling, as these can make you appear angry, disapproving, or unapproachable.

Movement

Using purposeful movement can help engage your audience and make your presentation more dynamic. Moving around the stage or walking towards your audience creates a sense of energy and enthusiasm, while standing still can convey calm and authority. It’s important to use movement purposefully and avoid pacing, fidgeting, or other distracting movements. When moving, be sure to maintain an open posture and keep your movements smooth and controlled.

Learning Story Structure

To tell a good story, it’s important to recognize classic story structure. Yes, all stories are unique and each tale should have its own aspects and features, but it should also follow a classic narrative arc. What does that mean? At its most basic, it means that a story should have a clear beginning, middle, and end.

That sounds simplistic, but it’s important to always remember. Your story should start with an opening that gets people interested. This could be a statistic, fact, question, or problem. Once you’ve established this opening (the beginning), it’s time to set the scene (the middle). The middle should have some tension, a challenge, or something else to overcome. 

To create this drama, think about what you’re presenting and what challenges you may have. For instance, if you’re explaining why your organization should make changes to become more efficient, talk about the issues you’re currently having with inefficiency. Make them relatable. You might want to talk about how your current processes cause you to miss deadlines or have to scramble to ship products on time. 

By making the challenges relatable, your audience will become personally invested in the story you’re telling. They’ll immediately be more interested in what you’re saying and they’ll want to know how these challenges can be overcome. 

This is when you bring everything to a satisfying conclusion. Talk about how you can conquer the challenges you’re faced with and leave the audience with a clear takeaway or call to action. 

For instance, in the above example where the challenge is becoming more efficient, the conclusion could be about how implementing certain steps can increase efficiency and stop shipments from being late. 

You can then ask the listeners to think about what their jobs would be like in this scenario and that will leave them thinking about their own situation and how your solution could solve their problems. If this happens, it will mean that you’ve kept them interested, accomplished your goal, and got your point across.

Practice your Story

Just having the proper layout of a story doesn’t automatically make your presentation a great one. However, when you start with a story, it becomes easier to speak with confidence. Once you’ve written the story down, practice delivering your talk. 

How does it flow? A good story should easily flow from beginning to middle to end. It shouldn’t be jarring, it shouldn’t jump around, and it shouldn’t be confusing or difficult to follow.

This is another benefit to structuring your talk like a story. When you make a point of having a strong beginning, middle, and end, you’ll avoid losing your audience or confusing them with an inconsistent timeline. 

Practice telling your story out loud to make sure it flows well. Consider recording yourself or having a trusted friend or colleague listen to you speak. Make sure they can follow your story and they’re interested in what you have to say.

When you talk, speak in a way that makes you feel comfortable. Your word choice, how you transition from point to point, and how you structure your sentences will be unique to you.
